Rumor: Sept 3, 2001 - C-USA on the Horizon. "I heard from a very reliable source last night that all that is left is formalities. Marshall is going to CUSA as a football only member. There is a conference presidents meeting in October for CUSA and a vote and an invite will come out of the same meeting.
My source also say that it is down to two conferences on where the rest of our sports will go. Our first choice is the A-10. But they have had only a luke warm response. Our allie hear is UMass, they are pulling for the HERD in discussions with conference officials and league presidents. However, as hard as UMass is pulling for us, Dayton is adamantly against us. They believe that the league which may already have twelve members (I'm sure about that) is big enough already.
He tells me that the most likely place for our other sports to land is the Horizon league. It only has nine members and really needs a tenth to even things out. He told me that when the talk started about Marshall to CUSA for football only it really peaked the interest of Horizon league presidents, and now they want Marshall badly. Dr. Angel spent four days in Chicago last week with officials from the CUSA and Horizon leagues to get to work on details. I'm not sure of every team in the Horizon league but some of the schools I'm aware of are Wisc. Green Bay, Butler, Cleveland St., Bradley, and I think Youngstown.
The Horizon sent one team to the NCAA last year and two to the NIT. The four years prior to that they have sent 2 and 2. If you remember Butler is the team that should have beaten Kentucky in the first round last year, they only lost by a couple of points.
Anyway, that is the word and like I said it comes from a very reliable source.
Forgive me if I have the name of the Horizon Conf. wrong. He was calling me from a cell phone and it was breaking up pretty bad. It used to be the MACC I believe and changed because it was to similar to the MAC. I think him referring to it as the Horizon." Thanks to < TW > for that rumor.

"If I am not mistaken , Bradley is in the Missouri Valley Con. not the Horizon . I say a new con. , but don't screw every other sport just to pacify the footballs needs need to prove themselves. Remember , just a few years ago we would have been talking the same stuff for the b-ball team , not football . With White as the coach,I don't think we will have to be worrying about that again any time soon . Stay in the MAC , all or none."

"Good post, but Butler beat Wake Forest in the first round of the bball tourney last year. Not sure who you were referring to when mentioning they should have beat UK."
