NEWS: Aug 14, 2001 - UCF
to the MAC. The
Orlando Sentinal published an article that says the MAC has offered
a football only membership to the University of Central Florida
but only if Marshall doesn't leave for Conference USA. "Presidents
in the MAC have extended a provisional invitation for the Golden
Knights to join the league as a football member, but ultimately
the decision rests not with UCF but with Marshall, sources at UCF
said." Click

Well it seems to me that
the MAC Officials are a day late and a dollar short. They should have
thought about this when they Brought Marshall and Buffalo into the league.
In reality they should dump two or three more schools and add Temple,
Navy and UCF. The MAC is now starting something that they should have
done and taken seriously a couple of years ago. Too late it seems.

IF I'M MARSHALL THAT
WOULDN'T KEEP ME IN THE MAC. WE NEED TO GET IN A BETTER CONFERENCE AND BY ADDING UCF STILL DON'T ADD THAT MUCH TO THE MAC. IT'S NICE THAT THEY ARE IN FLORIDA , BUT IN MY OPINION C-USA IS AND WOULD BE BETTER THAN THE MAC !!

Marshall and the MAC
both know Marshall has already decided not to accept a CUSA membership
for football only. They conspired to snag UCF, who thinks CUSA was going
to offer Marshall and Marshall was likely to accept. Rather than be left
INDY, they were told Marshall would stay in the MAC if UCF would join.
So, since Marshall was not going to go to CUSA. The MAC and MU just snagged
UCF from CUSA? This is merely an opinion.

Southern Miss fan posting up on the C-USA/MAC?Marshall/UCF deal . . . First off, this was a smart move by the MAC. The WAC sat still and let us do our worst and we took their best team. The MAC is at least trying to stall that from happening to them. By doing this they put Marshall and C-USA in a tight spot or find out for certain that Marshall is out, thus ending the waiting game. They also make it impossible for C-USA to get their 2nd pick if we can't have Marshall, as they'll have an agreement from UCF saying they're now in the MAC. This would also finally even out the MAC divisions and add a quality football member. Weakening your opponent is as important as strengthening your own group, that's why I like C-USA taking the best teams from the conferences below them in the pecking order.
Finally, some comments on some questions I've seen about C-USA on several Marshall boards: C-USA will be 10 teams this season with the addition of TCU from the WAC. This will be our last season of 7 conference games. USF is scheduled to join C-USA in 2003, but would be thrilled to join in 2002. In order to accomadate an eight game schedule, if Marshall joins in 2002, then USF will as well. That just puts the $1 million Championship Game all the sooner! SMU is still popular with some Presidents, but this addition is about football, and Marshall brings the most to the table in this case.

In my opinion, Marshall has outgrown the MAC in football. They are the only reason that the MAC was able to secure a second bowl game. I mean, who would have thought that a 6-5 Marshall team would win their conference title game, and then go on to win a bowl game? Not many people. That just proved that Marshall, no matter what conditions they are playing under, steps up in the big games and takes care of business. Who can say that about any other team in the MAC. No doubt that Toledo with a 10-1 record, was a better team than the Herd last year, but the one game that they needed to win more than any other last year (Western Michigan), they didn't. There is no secret that every program in the MAC hates Marshall. They came in to the conference and raised the bar so high, that teams are just now able to play at the level Marshall played at 3 years ago. And have you looked at any of the preseason annuals? How many exclude the MAC from certain segments such as: !
recruiting, future starts, etc. Even the brand new Sunbelt conference is listed in some. The Herd deserves more than that. They do need a new conference. I feel like the MAC just holds them down. Their schedule this year has the #1 Gators, TCU, 1AA UMASS, and the MAC. And they have the 106 toughest schedule. As long as they remain in the MAC, their strength of schedule will remain low, and their chances for a BCS game will remain slim to none. I have argued since they moved up to 1A, that it is not their fault that no big teams will schedule them. Now, they are getting the big boys, but I feel it is in vain because even if they win some of those SEC games, they will still be haunted by the Eastern Michigans and Buffalos. But now, they have a chance to change their destiny. Maybe Conf USA is not what they need. Maybe it is the Big East or ACC. I know Marshall can compete in football, and their other sports will come along due to the increased exposure a larger conf!
erence has. THE HERD IS READY TO MOVE ON!

Marshall would have to be crazy not to join C-USA. This is a chance of a lifetime for them. There are more bowls and that means more money for them. The teams are better and if marshall beats them that will give them the respect they deserve. There is no reason to stay in the MAC they can't offer what C-USA can.
