MAC . "Well
play the game the same way we did last year. Ill send you an e-mail
each week with the list of MAC games for that week. Youll pick a
winner for each of the games and then rank them in the order you are most
confident in your choice. For example, there are 12 games for Week 1 of
the 2001 MAC Football Season. 12 would be the game you are most confident
in your pick, 11 the game you are 2nd most confident in, etc. 1 is the
game you are the least confident in. Just pick the 12 winners and then
rank them from 12 to 1. Its that easy. If there are 6 games for
a particular week then you will rank the teams from 6 to 1 and so on".
Here's
the game. Thanks to < Joshua Spitz > for this game.

I found this report on Marshall's web site. It's titled - Longer term
plans for the university athletic programs - and specifically talks
about expanding the stadium and changing conference affiliation. "Depending
on the breakdown of the divisional structure of the NCAA in the coming
century, Marshall should seek a conference affiliation with a group of
peer institutions who share our goals of benefiting student-athletes and
who aspire to aggressively market the conference at a national level.
An appropriate conference affiliation for Marshall must be located in
a region where alumni and fans have the opportunity to travel to events,
thus helping to maintain interest, support and ties to the university."

I found this report on Marshall's web site. It is the from the MARSHALL
UNIVERSITY CLASSIFIED STAFF COUNCIL MINUTES, Thursday, June 14, 2001 Big
Green Room - Henderson Center. "ATHLETIC
COMMITTEE - Sonya Cantrell stated there had been no meetings this past
month, so she gave an overview of the last meeting. The NCAA investigation
continues. She understands it is "kind of resolved" but she has not heard
anything further. President Barrett asked about the Conference USA. Sonya
mentioned that they said our other sports are not strong enough to go;
football, yes, but the other sports, no, not right now. Women's diving
and golf are the two new sports they are looking at picking up."
Notice the date of that meeting - June 14, 2001.

Aug 21, 2001 - Basketball Jones. "I
saw Tamar out the other night and simply put he's finally put on the muscle
that may take him to the next level. I think with his bulk he will finally
be able to post up the smaller guards he faces with confidence and great
success while also out quicking 4's and 5's down low in the MAC.For a
guy who has lead the league in scoring it seems funny to say I expect
this to be his breakout year.Ala Bonzi or Wallylike year.
Also meet Blacksheer not at all what I expected. I kind of invisioned
this G-ed up Philly incarnated (I know he's from the south GA)bad attitude
guy. But I'm glad to report he was not that at all, quite friendly. I
told him that Herd fans were looking forward to seeing him bust some treys
and he had a cool response. He said thanks and that he looked forward
to busting them.
Also talked to one of the coaches and some things of note is Butler is
85% and looking good for the start of the season.
Enoch Bunch- will be a solid point guard before it's all said and done
but that the Wilson kid coming in would get most of the minutes this up
coming season.
Also asked him about the mysterious 6-9 290 pound guy that had been sighted
by some posters around the Marshall Boards. His only thought was that
it was Babo Serge who played in a couple of pickup games with the varsity
guys while in town. Babo is 6-9 230 he said and is really a work in progress
he stated that he's extremely, extremely athletic but hasn't played basketball
all of his life. So he's still refining his skills and means he'll only
get better the more he plays.

"Speculation that the
Mid-American Conference has issued an ultimatum to Marshall that the school
must decide by August 24 or 28 whether it wants to stay in the MAC is
not true." Glidden also stated in the last paragraph, "I
think the MAC is right for us," he said. "I can't say whether conferences
like the MAC will always be 1-A - time will tell - but I do know that
with a 25,000-seat football stadium we cannot afford to compete in a conference
that has 60,000- to 80-000-seat stadiums and pay their head football coaches
$500K-$1 million a year. Our athletic budget is very small, even for the
MAC, let alone thinking about a "bigger" conference." That's exactly

Aug 20, 2001 - Lets Stay?"I
doubt that Marshall will join C-USA. My thoughts are that the Herd will
stay in the Mac for another three-to-five years on a somewhat conditional
basis and see what shakes out with other conferences. Why do I say this?
1. The large dollar figure to join C-USA.
2. The desire to play the same conference teams in all sports, not just
football, although rivalries never seem to carry over between different
sports.
3. The increased travel expenses incurred by travelling longer distances.
4. The inevitable shakeout that is coming as a result of NCAA rules changes
regarding 1-A status.
5. The probability of a new league that makes more geographical sense
than C-USA, yet offers better competition than the MAC.
Just my opinion, and I am wrong a lot, but I just can't see the Herd leaving
the Mac--just yet." Thanks to < Rumor Boy> for that Opinion.

Buffalo, Northern Illinois,(The Band Fighters) can't wait to see thier

would meet with severe resistance due to tradition, but something will
have to be done. If not, the better teams will be absorbed by better conferences
and the MAC will be no more. In getting rid of these four we could call
upon UCF, Navy, Troy State and either USF or Flordia Atlantic. You may
laugh at the mention of Flordia Atlantic but Do you remember the name

this post. You know, I think he's right. Think about it... Why would
UCF be so gung-ho to join the MAC when just last week they were a rumored
front runner (along with Marshall) to join C-USA. I think it's because
the C-USA invite has already been extended and it wasn't extended to UCF!
So, UCF joins the MAC. What about that "don't leave us" stipulation
from the MAC to MU? Well, it's a bluff, UCF is already in whether Marshall
leaves or not. The MAC needs that exposure, they're not going to drop
UCF just because we leave, UCF has too much to offer them (mainly the
media market and a new geographical exposure). Besides, UCF has mucho
dinero and the MAC can also extend an invite to UMASS or Temple to make
an even 14. Reply

Here we go.. for months this rumor has been floating around, people
are speculating and theorizing. Then... we get a home and home deal with
Tennessee.... then we update our logo.... we're also supposed to add a
second tier to the East side of the stadium in 2002! What's going on here?
Glad you asked.... here's my theory(ies).
1. We're adding big
time schools to our schedule, Tennesse is willing to play in Huntington.
Series with Virginia Tech.
Home and Home with TCU. (C-USA)
Georgia.
LSU.
Wisconsin.
Possible FSU game.
Possible Colorado series.
Why all the sudden?
Do they know something we don't? A bigger stadium, bigger conference?
2. New logo.
Better national recognition?
More sales?
3. The MAC adds second
bowl, invites UCF football only membership.
Weak attempt to keep
Marshall from leaving?
4. MAC establishes
August 28 deadline.
Isn't the C-USA decision
in October? Are they putting us over the barrel?
5. NCAA stipulations
require minimum attendance.
MAC to possibly lose
3-4 teams, Big East to lose 2 (Rutgers and laughably UCONN one year after
they join). ACC two (Wake and Duke)? SEC one (Vandy)?
6. Does this mean
a new ACC, SEC, and Big East? Does the C-USA get Absorbed?
7. Am I wrong, or
didn't we only give the MAC a five year commitment?
This is our fifth
year.
8. Marshall Football
to C-USA
Mashall's other sports
to the Colonial Atheltic Conference (they just lost Richmond and ECU).
Only time will tell.

I must say
that the more I look at the new logos, the more I like them. I look back
at the old logos and I see a poorly proportioned "M" that really
had no standard.... there must have been 6 different versions of that
"M". And that Marco logo with the "M" and Marco on
top was just as bad. Confession.... I used to be a graphic designer for
a major screen printer (I've designed for every major college, Warner
Brothers, NASCAR, Rose Bowl and the Final Four),The logos that come from
major colleges are presented perfectely, the logos we used to get from
Marshall looked like a fax, from a fax, from a fax. The lines were crooked
and the curves were flawed. I've seen the artwork for the new logos and
I must say that they are very professional. They are clean and perfect
for reporduction, heck... the old logos were so bad that we had to redraw
them by hand just to get something that could be reproduced. Be proud
of these logos, they are top notch (better than what we ever received
from FSU). From a designer's stand point they are great designs, great
for reproduction at any size and well proportioned.Reply

Response : Aug 12, 2001 - HR
Speaks (return email to Russ). Russ,
First off, thanks for visiting HerdRumors.
I am perplexed by your comments
< how can the MAC expect to be accepted as a true 1A conference >
well they can because that's
what they are. There are certain stipulations to meet in order to be 1A
and whether you like it or not the MAC meets those stipulations. The NCAA
makes the rules not the MAC. Regarding your second comment <
The Herd could never compete week in and week out in a real conference
.> What makes you think this?
We've ONLY been in 1A for 4 years, the first three years we were dressing
1AA recruits and we still made four Bowl appearances with three wins.
We also beat two former national champions (Clemson and BYU). We're trying
to toughen up our schedule, but nobody is willing to play us. When we
came up to 1A we had no choice but to go to the MAC, there weren't any
other openings. When you're the new guy on the block you take what you
can get, do your best and take advantage of any opportunity you can (we
will be changing conferences soon). I really don't understand your last
comment < They should have stayed in 2A. > So
you are saying that the fact that we dominated 1AA for years (with two
national championships), then we move up and dominate the MAC for four
years with two Heisman candidates, that we should go backwards and go
back to 1AA? That makes no sense what so-ever. The smart thing is to keep
moving up. Why go backwards? It's obvious that in the next several years
we will be changing conferences, so watch closely. Lastly, why are you
so negative about Marshall? I for one like to see every school in West
Virginia win, especially when we play teams from other states. These schools
represent our state, we should root for all the Concords, Marshalls and
WVUs. I love this state, and the only good press this state gets is when
one of our schools knock off a school from another state. The only time
the national spotlight is on West Virginia is when we have a corrupt politician
(Arch Moore), Mountain Top Removal, the high unemployment rate, AND when
our football teams WIN.

remember those good ole days at Fair Field watching Marco try to graze
on the turf. I Also remember seeing him during the off-season penned up
at Camden Park, you could always count on seeing him during the train
ride. It was actually rather sad seeing him in that small pen, the bad
part was that his hooves were too long and they curled up. I guess he
didn't have enough room to walk to wear them down. As for if they will
ever get another live Marco... I haven't heard a thing. But
if you're interested, you can buy your own American Bison (he's not really
a buffalo) you
can buy one here.

Aug 8, 2001 - Media
Guide (logo reverse engineering). This
is weird, have any of you noticed the weird distorted buffalo in the media
guied? It's in place of the photos of players that they don't have pictures
of (example - page 36, Sam Erny). What exactly is that? I'm not sure,
but being the Graphic Designer that I am I can tell you how to make it.
Just follow my easy steps below. Reply

|
1.Start with
a clean logo.
2.Export said logo from Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand.
|
3.Open exported
file into Adobe Photoshop.
4.Select Filters > Distort > Wave.
5.Select Type: Triangle and set wavelength and amplitude as appropriate.
6.Select Filters > Noise> Add Noise and set Distribution as
Uniform and check Monochromatic.
|
7.Select >
Image > Mode > Greyscale.
8.Select the Smudge Tool from the Tool Bar, set the brush size and
go to it.
(I used a larger brush size than what was used in the Media Guide
because of time constraints),
|
| This
effect can also be achieved in MetaCreations Painter by using the
Distorto Brush and possibly the Impressionist Cloner Brush. |
Hmmmm!

Cirminiello of College Football News listed his 32 must see games of the
year. He listed the Marshall/Florida game as #32. Here's the link: http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2001/Features/Best_Games_RC.htm
And here's what he had to say: "#32 Marshall
@ Florida-September 1
Ther'ís something about this David and Goliath match up that I
find so appealing. Even in a losing effort, this is a perfect stage for
the Thundering Herd to make a statement against an elite opponent."

I received
this rumor over the weekend. It seems that the present location of Mycroft's

Aug 6, 2001 - Golf?
I know everyone's
pumped for football season, but lets take a minor break for a minute.
The Herald Dispatch has written a nice article about Assistant Golf coach
Pat Carter and his hunt for a Seventh straight State Am title. You
can read the article here. I might add that in High School I personally
beat "Pat the Great" in a heated golf match (did I mention that
we were playing a computer game?) I'm sure if you ask him he "won't
remember that." Yea right Pat. Reply

"Regarding
the chairback prices and the donation to the Big Green... one question
for the complainers: how do you think Marshall pays for 85 young student-athletes
to attend college? It sure isn't paid for by sales of hot dogs on game
day! I get really irritated when folks complain of prices... if it comes
down to being able to afford a seat vs. getting a chairback, I would rather
sit anywhere in the stadium but the chairbacks. (My rear end is too big
and my legs are too long to fit in those chairbacks!) Check out the chairback
prices at Ohio State for comparison... $3000 per seat per year for five
or seven year contract! My point is this: if you want something to gripe
about regarding the chairback donation, then it would be if the Herd did
not graduate its seniors. And, based on the percentages the last few years,
everyone making the donations to the Big Green ARE getting their money's
worth, because the purpose of a student-athlete is to get a college education.
Welcome to the big time... gotta pay to play!" Thanks

"I should
hold off writing this opinion for a few days. Hopefully by then it will
be a moot point. However if Kendrick Starling is not acedemically eligible
after the JUCO route to Division 1 football, he should never have been
offered. It's a wasted scholarship. I can see taking a chance on a high
school prop 48 player, but not on a JUCO player. If Mr. Starling does
not have his classroom ACT in order by now, it is safe to assume he is
not going to ever. We should have known his acedemic status long before
now!" Thanks to < Tom
