30, 2004 - UTEP Accepts Invitation. "UTEP has accepted
an invitation to join Conference USA beginning on July 1, 2005.
UTEP will join current Western Athletic Conference members Rice, SMU and Tulsa
as members of Conference USA. The Miners will be grouped in the league's Western
Division with Houston, Rice, SMU, Tulane and Tulsa. The Eastern Division of Conference
USA will be composed of Central Florida, East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, Southern
Miss and UAB beginning with the 2005-06 athletic year." Click

30, 2004 - Manchin Not A Friend of Marshall. Reported in
the Herald Dispatch- "According to the flier, while Manchin
was a state senator in 1991, he introduced a resolution that
would have eliminated the teaching of basic science at the Marshall
medical school. All such instruction would have had to have been
at West Virginia University. That would have had the effect of
killing the Marshall medical school, the flier says. At the time,
Manchin’s district included Marion and Monongalia counties.
WVU is in Monongalia County. The flier also quotes a newspaper
article in which Manchin described Marshall as "a second-rate

Giannini. Southern
Miss athletics director Richard Giannini denied Saturday reports
that Conference USA was about to extend an expansion invitation
to Texas El Paso. During the annual Black and Gold spring football
game, Giannini did say the conference was closing in on a 12th
