March 2002
Comment: March 30, 2002 - Not
Sure About This. "Griffin told WOWK-TV he wants to establish
a tradition in which Marshall players touch the plane pieces as
they enter the field, similar to stadium traditions where Notre
Dame players touch a "Play Like a Champion Today" sign
and Clemson players touch Howard's Rock." Click

Opinion: March 27, 2002 - Whinning.
"this is in reply to the fella that was complaining about the
whining, im with ya on the football part but you talk about uninformed
fans, your one of em, i guess you havent seen dana altman and donovan
succeed in other programs, both were in the ncaa tourney, as for
players not reaching their potential, that is also reflective of
the coaching they receive, white is unbelievably bad, talent wise,
the past 3 years they should have at least made a run in the mac
tourney once, white coach's way to uptight and his teams play reflects
that, i started disliking white when he took moved travis young
to 2 guard, he was one of the best point guards in the mac, that
was the begining of the end for me, get white out soon, as for football
fans, its quite a disgrace, especially the students, ridiculous,
im out" Thanks to < brian > for that Opinion. Reply

Rumor: March 27, 2002 - Men's
Regionals. "My inside sources tell me there is someting
wrong with one of the 2003 NCAA Men's Regional Sites and the NCAA
is trying to find a new home.
The Huntington Sports Cmte. is bidding on bringing those games here!"

Opinion: March 25, 2002 - Defeatists?
"As a Marshall alumnus and diehard Herd fan, I can't keep
quiet any longer! I have got to say that Marshall, unfortunately,
has some of the most spoiled, ignorant, uninformed, and disloyal
fans I've seen anywhere. I'm a much bigger fan of football than
basketball, but all the trash that's being talked about Greg White
is enough to induce vomiting. It's not his fault that his players
never performed up to their potential. So the Herd didn't have as
good a season as they should have--he's still BY FAR the best coach
we've had since Huck. Freeman? HAH! Dana Altman? Pathetic! And what
did that cocky little hot shot Billy Donovan accomplish at Marshall?
NOT A DAMN THING!
And as for the football fans, if I hear one more idiot whine about
how "Marshall gets no respect from ESPN," "ESPN is
biased against Marshall," blah blah blah, I'm gonna slap him
in the mouth. ESPN has treated Marshall pretty damned good if you
ask me. What other MAC team gets as many games on ESPN as Marshall?
And all through the GMAC Bowl, Steve Levy and Todd Christiansen
had nothing but praise for Marshall, especially Leftwich (although
the Herd fans probably didn't notice because most of them quit watching
at halftime). ESPN also did that hour-long TV special on Marshall,
which was very well done, and that I liked even better than the
Ashes to Glory documentary. Not bad for a network that supposedly
has no respect for Marshall.
Marshall had one of the best years they've ever had last season,
yet attendance was down even more. That is inexcusable. Ticket prices?
Pretty cheap compared to most big-time programs, especially for
season tickets. Just a $300 donation, and that's only if you want
chairback seats. At some schools you can donate $1000 and still
not be guaranteed that there will even be any tickets left for you
to buy! Ask fans of Ohio State or Tennessee. Marshall fans want
the Herd to hit the big time, but don't want to pay the price. They
expect the Herd to field a big time football team on a small time
operating budget.
For a school that has accomplished so much over the years (in both
football AND basketball) I can never understand why so many Herd
"fans" are so damned defeatist." Thanks to < Fed

Opinion: March 20,
2002 - Where's the Loot? CNN\SI released the financials
of all the NCAA 1-A conferences. While the MAC financials were dismal,
what's even worse is that every school in the MAC recieved $103,843...
what's wild is that Marshall only received $92,926! What's up with
that? Click

Opinion: March 18,
2002 - Idiots! "The bottom line is that all those
lovely idiots that we have in Charleston need to get their acts
together! Each year the majority of state fundings go to WVU because
they are bring in more people out of state to attend their university.
This is the biggest bunch of BS I've heard in a long time,,,there
needs to be better way of regulating state funding besides this!
Every university should be looked as an equal, no matter if it's
WV state or WVU! AND BY THE WAY YOUR DAMN RIGHT EVERYONE IN THE
STATE IS PAYING FOR THIS FUNDING AND WE ALL HAVE A RIGHT TO SAYS
WHATS WHAT!!!" Thanks to < FEELtheTHUNDER > for this

Opinion: March 15, 2002 - You
Pay For It. "I am a Marshall Student, and I feel that my
hard earned money that I pay in tuition should not go to some stupid
football game. I have been a WV resident all my life, and I am a
senior at MU. Why should I have to pay for MU and WVU to play football?
Maybe if you make a generous donation, Dan Angel wouldn't mind having
this football game. Of course, rumor does have it that he was to
empty our school's wallet to challenge WVU. If you want the game
to be played, then you pay for it!" Thanks to < Anonymous

Counter Opinion:
March 15, 2002 - Oh Believe Me I Do. Well Mr Anonymous,
do you actually think you are the only person to ever pay tuition
at Marshall? Well, I did too. Do you actually think that tuition
is the only source of income that Marshall receives? You see Mr.
Anonymous Marshall AND WVU are both State Run Schools, this means
that the majority of the dollars that these schools receive to operate
on are funded by... No not the students... By whom? You guessed
it... The TAX PAYERS of the great state of West Virginia. So in
response to the last sentence of your post "If you want the
game to be played, then you pay for it!"... Well Mr. Anonymous
I AM PAYING FOR IT... EVERY SINGLE DAY! I payed for it with my tuition
while I was at MU and with my tax dollars from EVERY SINGLE pay
check.
Opinion: March 14, 2002 - Face
to Face! "Has anyone noticed that 2 former Marshall Hoops
coaches are squaring off Friday in the NCAA? For those of you who
have forgotten what that is due to our continued mediocrity, Billy
the Kid & Dana Altman (now w/Criegton via Kansas State) Where's
this so called top 10 basketball conference rating the MAC has?
1 school in the NCAA for the 3rd staight year! I'm cancelling my
season tickets for HOOPs in 2002-03 and asking that my Big Green
donation not be spent to support the Hoop Program. White & West
Must GO!" Thanks to < Bummy > for this Opinion. Reply

Rumor: March 13, 2002 - BCS
BS! I found this on TechSideline.com, it seems to explain why
Marshall might be having such a hard time scheduling quality OOC
opponents. And my friends, if this is true we could be headed to
Mid Major Purgatory.
"Faster than you can say "Directional Michigan,"
the TSL Future Football Schedules page has undergone a number of
changes. LSU and N.C. State have been added, and the continuous
sniping about Virginia Tech's OOC schedule can now end. It is about
time. If Tech is going to be a top program it is high time they
scheduled like one. The impetus behind schedule-toughening moves
by all top programs is a change in the BCS calculus that places
greater emphasis on SOS and less on RUTS. Whacking MAC teams will
no longer cut it for programs interested in competing for the MNC,
a group that numbers most." Click

a Grain of Salt. Found this interesting post on the UCF board.
"I heard this back in Feb from a couple of people. I believe
it and it makes sense. It appears MTSU would be the likely replacement,
which I think would be an excellent addition. Troy is also being
mentioned. Either would help add diversity to the geography of the
MAC." Click

Opinion: March 12, 2002 - 2005?
"I think it is a kick in the face to see White back until
the 2005-2006 season!!! I can not believe MU would do such a thing.
To have West announce that was very disappointing to me. The Herd
supporters will not be happy and attendence will reflect it. Wait
and see!" Thanks to < Eric > for this Opinion. Reply

Opinion: March 12, 2002 - Season
Tickets. "Just heard the news that White will return for
next season. Well, as a 7-yr. season ticket owner, I won't. The
team is simply not progressing. Heaping layer upon layer of excuses
has only demeaned an already-grim situation. Now I suppose his goal
is to hope for slight improvement until he can overcome even lower
levels of mediocrity in the OVC. Bad move." Thanks to < David

"A family member of mine works with the WV State Senate
and has heard some of the more influential MU supporters and alumni
say that they would be VERY surprised if White is back next year.
THANK GOODNESS. Did you read what he said after MU got bounced from
the MAC tourney? To sum it up he was not disappointed in the 15-15
season and that we are doing better than the other teams that came
in with MU. Who cares what the other scrubs are doing. We are MU.
And the expectations were a bit higher for us since we had some
of the best talent in the league this year." Thanks to <

Foolin'. "I hope no one was fooled by the herds game with
akron, white has got to go, bring in someone else, he has had way
to much talent in the past and has nothing to show for it. Slay
and Vanhoose have not improved that much since their sophomore years
and its because white is a poor coach. Bring in Happy Osborne from
NAIA power Georgetown College. THey are currently ranked #1 now
and have made the NAIA national tournament 11 years in a row. He
is a outstading rercruiter and a great coach. Please, get White
out. Oh yeah, and another thing about fooball, i say we go up to
Morgantown and put it on the eers. WE all know they are scared to
come to huntington so lets headto mtown and bring the thunder, OUT>>"

Opinion: March 4, 2002 - Pirates.
"I've been thinking about how Marshall can't get a Home and
Home series with WVU and how ECU has the same problem with UNC and
NC State. I think MU should start a Home and Home series with the
Pirates. Think about it, the Mobile bowl was arguably the most exciting
bowl game this year AND the Marshall / ECU connection cannot be
denied. What do y'all think?" Thanks to < Anonymous>
