- Between the Horns. "So now everybody's talking CUSA CUSA
CUSA. Frankly, I'm almost tired of thinking about it. Last October
it was almost done. Now we're talking February with a basketball
option and trickle in the rest of the olympic sports. I've herd
the other sports will temporarily go into OVC for a while. And to
boot I'm hearing junk about Notre Dame talking to Coach P."

Opinion: Dec 18, 2001 - 18 Games.
"Will the Herd win 18 games in basketball? I had posted my
theory earlier regarding what it takes to keep the current "regime"
in place. If that number is not reached, I expect some deeper rumblings
than ever... but I don't know if a shakeup is coming--just yet."

Opinion: Dec 17, 2001 - Conspiracy
Theory. "I know you all have read me talk about how I have
seen ECU play in person twice this year since I live in SE NC, but
I have to say it again now that it's official that MU will play
them. If this is a close game something is bad wrong (i.e. the run
defense forgets to tackle for a 3rd game in a row). One more thing-
I am no conspiracy theorist, but I took my car into my local dealership
for some under warranty work and they are now keeping my car over
the weekend and until Tuesday at the earliest because they forgot
to order the part. On the front and back of my car are MU license
plates. Do you think that these bozos are ECU fans and are trying
to keep me out of commission so I can't get the Airport for my flight
to 'Bama? They have HERD me yell so maybe they think they are doing
their part to quiet the MU crowd. Coincidence? Probably so, but
one must wonder." Thanks to < Jeremy > for this opinion.

- All Green Please! "I think that Marshall should break
out their new uniforms (if indeed they actually will get new uniforms)for
the bowl game. I like the kelly green and the traditional scheme
they use now (blah...blah..blah) but I think its time for a change.
Anyone heard anything about this?" Thanks to < Danny Akers

Opinion: Dec 13, 2001
- Thought From The Deep! "As I sit out here in paradise
(Hawaii), not a day goes by that I don't think about Marshall Football.
Where it was, where it is, and where it will be in the future? Anyone
can see that we have come a long way since 1970, but I want more.
I don't want people to say "Yeah, that is a good program for a small
school." I want people to think of Marshall in the same class as
they think of UF, FSU, Miami, OSU, etc. But I see a great challenge
ahead, not only for us at Marshall, but all of the so called "Little
Schools" in college football. The problem with Marshall is not the
MAC. As a matter of fact, I think the MAC is a great fit for Marshall
(the only thing better would be the Big East), cause all of its
teams are close enough that Marshall fans can go to away games every
week (except Central Florida) and the competition is getting better.
The problem is the 6 conferences that house the "Big Schools". That
is our problem. Look at the controversy the BCS has created in college
football (and who makes up the BCS). Nowadays, only the big 6 conferences
receive the bowl bids, the TV contracts, and the merchandising.
There are 31 teams going to a bowl game this year that have a worse
record than 9-3 Hawaii and 8-3 Bowling Green, but they are both
staying home for the holidays. The problem is that there are only
about 3 at large bowl bids because the "Big Schools" have the rest
locked up automatically for their 6-5 teams with losing conference
records. That is fair? What about the national title? A playoff
is inevitable now, but will it be fair? You can bet the ponderosa
that the "Big Schools" will manage to corrupt a playoff system just
like the BCS. Instead of a 16 team (11 conf winners, 5 at large)
tournament, I am sure it will be an 8 team (6 big conf winners and
2 at large teams), which will be the same thing the BCS is today.
It is nothing more than the Big guy holding the little guy down.
Well, I am tired of it! I say that we (not ! only as HERD fans,
but also college football fans) must do something about it! We need
to make our voices HERD! I am a huge college football fan, but if
things continue on this path, I will proceed in boycotting 1A football
(except Herd games) cause I don't want to be a part of the problem
too. " Thanks to < Adam

HerdRumors New Edition: Dec 12,
2001 - Between the Horns. A great new Herd related column by
Secret Agent #70. "Leftwich. The name rings true across Huntington
and across many parts of the nation. Sometimes I sit and wonder,
what could possibly be next for the Herd. Just when I think I've
herd it all, I hear it again. Brown, Parker, Moss, Pennington, and
now Leftwich. Who's next?" Click

Opinion: Dec 12, 2001 - Back to
the Future."2002 preseason top 25, a Heisman candidate,
9 starters back on O, the kicker/punter too!If we can put together
a strong D we will be national news every week! Man, I can not wait!
If we can take VT out in the first game we could dominate the whole
season. I see 13-0 again and Byron coming in 2nd or maybe even winning
the Heisman next year." Thanks to < Mark Turner > for

Opinion: Dec 11, 2001 - Defensive
Backs."In the H-D today is an article regarding the current
d-backs... all things considered, this young secondary is only giving
up 19 more yards passing a game than Hines and Derricott did their
senior year. (199 ypg compared to 180 ypg.) That is much better
than I anticipated, for some reason I thought it was a bigger gap.
Perhaps--in the long run--the suspensions that got playing time
for the young DL players were a good thing, because losing our DEs
to graduation could make the situation rough again next year. I
hope that losing three of our four linebackers will not impact our
defense as much as can be expected... time will tell." Thanks

Opinion: Dec 11, 2001 - Bump &
Run."I feel we have a lot more speed than ECU. We will
have no problem's moving the ball and scoring. ECU has a great running
back in Henry, and a good offensive line. If our deffense plays
a eight man box, we will stuff the run; and put pressure on ECU's
qb. Henry is all ECU has offensively, the wr's are marginal, and
the qb cannot handle pressure. I hope coach Pruett is reading this
article, we don't want to see a repeat of the last three weeks of
defense. We have the speed at the corners and free saftey to match
up with most teams outside the top 15 in the country. We need pressure
on the rb and qb every down, and play man to man bump and run on
the wr's. We ran this defense for most of the 1st quarter against
toledo and it worked, why we went away from it makes me sick to
think about. Anyway we should romp ECU my prediction is Marshall
48, ECU 28. We are......Marshall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Thanks to

Rumor: Dec 10, 2001 - Rainbows
in Huntington."After borrowing tapes from Marshall to scout
Miami OH, Univ of Hawaii Coach June Jones was able to see the Herd
in action. When asked by local reporters about Miami OH's star quarterback,
Jones said that he did not know a great deal about him because he
was too busy watching the best quarterback in the country play (he
was talking about Leftwich). He said that Leftwich was the best
quarterback that he had seen in college in a very long time... Also,
it is rumored that Coach Jones might be working on an unusual 1
for 1 deal with the Herd (unusual because Hawaii rarely plays nonconference
road games) beginning in 2003 at Marshall!" Thanks to <

Opinion: Dec 10, 2001 - Good Idea
but WVU Won't Let it Happen. "The Big East conference should
dump Rutgers and invite MU to join. This would have two major benefits:

long ago or if ever hit has hapened. so at last for one day, Go

HerdRumors New Edition: Dec 4,
2001 - Between the Horns. A great new Herd related column by
Secret Agent #70. "Welcome back...to the real world. After
last weeks heartbreaker I believe the reality is starting to set
in for a few people. Our beloved Herd lost a game. And that's it.
Just a game. Granted, it was the championship game but it was a
game. And it was to a team that played better than us at least one
night out of the season as much as I even hate to admit it."

Rumor: Dec 4, 2001 - I Did Not
Know That. "I like many other herd fans felt sick after
watching what happened in Toledo on Friday night..it hurt bad...and
just as many of us fans wondered about the play calling and errors
made I discussed them with my friends. I was out discussing these
errors last night with my buddy who is a trainer on the team..one
of the "water-boys." The certain play came up when we were on the
1/2 yard line up 20-0..Byron dropped back to pass the ball and in
the process was sacked for a sizeable lost that eventually lead
to the field goal..Well my buddy said that when the offensive line
came off the field they asked why didnt we sneak the ball, dont
u believe in us? the coaches reply shocked me..he said they did
call run..and it was a run on there wrist ban..but on Byron's it
called for a pass..So something so simple as wearing the wrong wrist
ban kept us outta the endzone that time.." Thanks to < REW

"Marshall will dominate ECU and the D will come out of
their coma. Coach Pruett will make sure that we are ready for 4
qtrs this time. He knows that the D fell asleep and he's going to
make sure that we head into next year loaded.2002 will be better
than 1996 and 1999! We are loaded! when the defense steps up at
GMAC, we all will feel better about next year. The offense will
ave over 40 pts per game in 2002, so get ready!!" Thanks to

Opinion: Dec 3, 2001 - More From
the Fanst. "THE TEAM LOST THE GAME...everyone needs to
understand that right off!!! I was there and saw it first hand,
IT WAS THE WORST I'VE EVER SEEN OUR DEFENSE PLAY!!! It's really
hard to say what all went wrong BUT I'll give you the main plays
that I think "GAVE THE GAME AWAY"...1# WE'RE ON THE GOAL LINE AND
WE TRY AND PASS FOR A TD-"THE QB IS SACKED AND WE KICK A FIELD GOAL"...2#
THE D STOPS TOLEDO, and we're still UP on them at this time and
could maybe go up by 2 scores, and number 80 trys to pick up a bounching
punt...WHY I HAVE NO IDEA!!!...3# AS BAD AS I HATE TO SAY IT, IT
WAS OUR D-LINE...ALL NIGHT WE GOT PUSHED BACK...4# THE DEFENSIVE
PLAY CALLING COSTED US THE GAME...ALL TOLEDO DID WAS THROW THE SCREEN
PASS AND RUN, THEY HAD NO REAL PASSING GAME!!! EVERYONE COULD SEE
WHAT THEY WERE DOING WHY DIDN'T THE TEAM??? OOH WELL I'M OVER IT
NOW BUT MY GOD WE GAVE THEM THE GAME. ONE THING EVERONE HAS TO BE
PROUD OF IS OUR FANS!!!---IT DID LOOK LIKE TOLEDO WEST VIRGINIA
up THE! RE......I'M ALREADY STARTING TO THINK ABOUT NEXT YEAR AS
DUMB AS IT SOUNDS, DOES EVERYONE REMEMBER OUR OFFENSIVE LINE LAST
YEAR now look at this years---a 100% improvement, now think about
our defense and think about next year OPENING AT V-TECH...get ready!!!

Your Last Comment. "What a game,i could not believe all
the green in TOledo, as for the game, the muffed punt by Jones DID
NOT lose the game, it was a combination of many things. Question,
1st and goal, on the one, why not sneak byron, it woulda been 27-0,
big differene between 23-0, byron played outstanding, They just
couldnt stop Toledo, a great season anyways, the GMAC bowl shoud
be a good end for them, pick up a solid win and build for next season,
the defense must step up their game, thats the difference between
this team and past team, no becketts, graces, lyons, or hines, ROberto
Terrell is the next star in the defensive backfield. Oh yeah , Hey
steve, how bout them VOLS!!! ROcky TOp,you'll always be home sweet

Opinion: Dec 3, 2001 - Coaches
Poll. "We are still ranked in the top 25 coaches poll.
This just shows how a dominant program marshall has become. Conference
championships are nice, but bowl game wins is what set's teams apart.
this season is not over by a long shot. A gmac bowl win will put
a nice finishing touch on this year, and I guarantee you a pre-season
top 20 ranking for next year going into the virginia tech game.
We should be excited to be in the situation we are in right now,
and especially the recognition our program has to still be ranked
in the top 25 after two losses, being a mac school. What happened
Saturday is behind us, Dec 19th we are playing for staying top 25
this year, and for what can be our biggest year ever in div 1-A
next year. Let's give our team all the fan support they can handle
at the GMAC bowl and help our team to the next level. we are....Marshall."

Opinion: Dec 3, 2001 - D Scheme.
"I want to say the offense played a spectacular game but
the D and special teams were less than spectacular! I don't know
what it takes to get a D fired up but they haven't found it yet.
That was just pathetic! I went to the game and I know that when
you are killing a team you don't let down. Coach Kelly needs to
be fired! We were playing a D scheme that was working very well
in the first quarter and they changed it!! Why on earth do you go
away from what is working!!! That makes no sense! Max Yates said
the same thing in the paper. They have a lot to work on before the
bowl game but the offense was great! It was a terrible feeling to
be there and see us fall apart. Gut wrenching! There fans were loving
it and they let it be known to any Herd fan there. I have no problem
of that cause I would have done the same thing. Oh well, I guess
we have to look forward to next year. Go Herd! " Thanks to

Opinion: Dec 3, 2001 - Jeremy's
Lament. "It's really hard not to lay this whole loss at
the feet (or hands) of Curtis Jones. As upset as I was to see that
mental error, the game was once again decided by our porous run
defense. Leftwich played wonderful and should get some more attention.
You can't win them all, and this is going to be a big motivator
when the game comes back to its true home next year (at least we
will put butts in the seats). I'm proud of my Herd and the effort
they put forth. It's easier to accept when you lose to a great team
on the road. Hats off to Toledo and give Conf-USA hell in the Motor
City Bowl. I couldn't be in Toledo but I have already booked my
trip to 'Bama. GO HERD!" Thanks to < Jeremy > for this

Opinion: Dec 3, 2001 - Championships.
"Before anyone disses a particular player, look at ALL
the game's blunders by the Herd... a muffed K/O and a muffed punt...
an interception... and jockstraps littered the field on that special
teams fake field goal. You can't expect to win a championship game
if you have that many mistakes. So instead of blaming a particular
player, take into account the large number of what-ifs that could
have happened: what if Sciullo had scored? if Byron had made that
last pass? if Byron had hit Davis and/or Watts when they were wide
open down the sideline? What if Byron hadn't thrown into double
coverage? If the field had been dry, would Taylor have run for 300
yards? While it may be convenient to blame a player for his particular
error, there are overwhelming additional reasons to know why the
game was lost. The simple fact is, you CANNOT play championship
football and expect to win when the team as a whole does not play
error-free football. And while I am on my soapbox, coach Pruett
did the absolute right thing: he put the same player in to return
the following kickoff. It is one thing for a coach to chew on someone,
but it is a great coach who believes in his players after their
mistakes. BTW, I remember the days when an 11-2 record after December
was just a dream. So I hope all the critics remember that too."
