Nov 29, 2001 - I Concur Sir. "Here
are just a few of my opinions regarding Thundering Herd football:
(1) Marshall should get out of the MAC and into a more respectable
conference; (2) The BCS system should be abolished so that ANY team
with a good enough record can compete for a national title; and
(3) The people of Morgantown, West Virginia should swallow their
pride, and begin a great tradition, i.e., an annual game between
WVU and Marshall (without Big East officials, thank you)."

Nov 29, 2001 - I Thought Toledo Always Sold Out! "I
heard that Toledo has only sold 6,000 tickets as of Sunday and they
are not expect a crowd of more than 20,000 for the game Friday.
Is is any wonder why the MAC has let MU host the game every year.
The fans may not come out to watch Akron or Buffalo, but they sure
come out to see Western and Toledo in championship games. If they
get less than a full house, 1/3 of them could be wearing green.
GO HERD!!!" Thanks to < Jeremy > for this rumor.

Nov 29, 2001 - Close Game! "I
think the close game with YSU will benefit us. Up to that point,
other than the Florida game; we looked unbeatable in the MAC. This
was a wake up call, and it came at the right time. Also another
positive came out of this, we actually went from 20 to 18 in both
polls, what? When has that ever happened to us before after a game
with a 1-AA opponent? Are we getting a little more recognition with
our program now? Maybe so....anyway expect a close game the first
half and we will pull away in the 4th quarter on this one, with
cheers from the thousands....and thousands....of Marshall fans cheering
to our 5th straight MAC championship. Marshall 45 Toledo 28."

Herd will be ready to play come friday, we all know ole Bobby will
have em ready, i think the ysu game was a good test to see what
they need to work on. Everyones cryin bout how they struggled with
ysu, WHO CARES, they won, toledo got absolutly drubbed by bowling
green, maybe they should be goin to the motor city bowl instead
of the rockets. If Bowling Green can put up 56 points against toledo,
Marshall should have no trouble at all puttin up the most, just
need to stop chester and for the 5th straight year, the goalposts
will come down, im gonna be rushing the field come friday night

Opinion:
Nov 27, 2001 - To Poll or Not to Poll? "Polls
Still Confusing--Okay, this poll stuff still leaves me scratching
my head. Has Marshall -- because of their play the last five years
-- earned enough respect to get into the polls with one loss? (Thinking
back to Chad's junior year, when the loss to BG kept us out.) Do
the sports writers and coaches feel obligated to pay lip service
to the program, or is there genuine appreciation? Or is it a matter
of keeping the top school of the MAC rated to keep the minor conferences
happy? And why, if Toledo dropped out after barely beating Ohio,
does Marshall move up after barely beating a [very good] I-AA program?
Has Marshall actually crossed over from would-be chart climbers
to sentimental favorites of the voters--how else can you explain
a team like Ohio State making it back in the polls with four losses?
Is this an indication of respect and a rising program? Thanks for
allowing me to vent." Thanks to < Rumor Boy >

Nov 26, 2001 - Dear Herd Fans. "Herd
fans are starting to sound like whiny Buckeye fans (I live in Columbus)!
A good team wins when they don't play particularly well (like Pruett
said). When they didn't wear green-on-green that told the players
that it was not a "big game". I like many fans have been
disappointed with the defense. However, NCAA football has become
wide-open--look at the Miami-Hawaii and Akron-EMU games of the last
two weeks! When someone scores 62 on Nebraska, well, it just isn't
a Marshall problem. We've made some big plays when we've had to.
Finally, we played YSU because it brought money into the athletic
coffers--no more, no less. The crowd was disappointing, but with
all of the negatives (weather, holiday weekend, no students, 1-AA
opponent) it was about what I expected. I WOULD like to see the
athletic department downgrade the prices of the end zone seats to
$10 to bring in those that wouldn't otherwise be there. Part of
"growing the program" is making tickets harder to come
by so that demand will exceed supply. THEN tickets can be sold at
higher prices! Hey--MU won and are going bowlin'. Better that we
played poorly against YSU than Toledo (oh, yeah, they gave up 56
points!). GO Herd!" Thanks to < Dennis Fravel >

Rumor:
Nov 21, 2001 - Something's Going on Here. I don't know what's
going on, but there are way too many rumors of conference expansion
floating around. First Marshall's exceptance to the Horizon and
C-USA are tabled, then comes the NCAA's 1-A requirements for football
attendance and home games and then reports come out that several
teams plan to leave C-USA. And now THIS? A second rumor in as many
days stating that the ACC is expanding. Maybe Pruett and Angel had
a reason to ask the big donors to help come up with 22 million?
Hmmm, the C-USA expansion gets tabled and then several days later
the MU Athletic Department says that they want to play for National
Championships like the SEC and at the same time they ask the alumni
to help come up with 22 million to update the track and build a
new baseball stadium. Where there's smoke there's fire, I
don't know where we're going but we're going to end up somewhere
and if Coach Pruett wants to play for National Championships he's
NOT going to do it in the MAC or the C-USA!
"Talked to ACC Insider in North Carolina and rumor is true!
But that like the other person said that it won't be announced for
awhile to keep UofL in C-USA. He also said one of the other teams
is Miami and the 3rd team is TBD so the new divisions haven't been
decided yet. He also said UofL was a very close vote because the
football schools didn't vote for us but that the Carolina and bball
schools got us in! The bball schools wanted a basketball power to
offset two football powers and they really wanted Rick Pitino and
UofL basketball in the league. He also told me UNC was the biggest
supporter of UofL coming into the ACC. He also said this is why
we have scheduled many ACC ftball and bball schools in the next
couple years. The ACC likes UofL cause we have a solid fan base
in both football and basketball, great facilities, great non-revenue
sports, we travel well to bowl games and tournaments, and we have
name recognition and tradition in basketball and a developing football
program with high potential. Both UofL and the ACC are very excited
about this but won't release it until the summer at the earliest.
So the rumors are true." Click

Nov 20, 2001 - LSU Wants Out. According to the WV Gazette...
"Sources at Marshall
have confirmed that LSU has contacted MU officials about a possible
buyout of the football game scheduled between the Herd and Louisiana
State in 2003. LSU announced late last month that it would play
one Division I-A team from Louisiana each season for at least the
next eight years. LSU needs to create room on its 2003 schedule
to accommodate an early-November nonconference matchup in Baton
Rouge with Louisiana Tech." Maybe

Boston College would be leaving the BE and accepting membership
in the ACC. The dinner is hosted by the UM Atheletic Department

Nov 20, 2001 - Upper Echelon. "The
GMAC Bowl doesn't necessarily thrill me either; however, it is another
STEP to get us where we want to go. It may take awhile, but eventually
we WILL beat a big name school and things will change. We missed
our chance with Florida--next year we get Virginia Tech! We also
need to perform well on TV , which should continue for the foreseeable
future with Leftwich, Watts, and company. Finally, we need to keep
winning ten games a year to PROVE that we're a true powerhouse.
It isn't fair that we have to settle for "secon-tier Bowls"
and it sucks that there is no playoff system. Therefore, we must
force the powers that be to acknowledge that we deserve to be in
the upper echelon. That occurs with continued exposure and WINS!
Eventually it will happen--just not yet!" Thanks

Nov 19, 2001 - The Reward. "Well,
I guess Marshall is going to play another non ranked opponent in
a bowl and trash them too. Every year we play in a bowl and end
up playing a team that doesn't have a big name or even a decent
record. I am not excited at all about playing ECU and if you are
then good for you. We deserve better than ECU and we never get it.
We shouldn't have jumped on the GMAC bowl so soon considering that
there were a few other bowls looking at us. We get too excited and
accept it. We could have played a better team in a better bowl possibly.
You really think the GMAC bowl would have taken someone else besides
us? They would have waited to see what we would have done. Oh well,
another year of no respect. Only in the polls but that seems like
the only excitement we have every year is to see if we can make
it in the top 25. We usually play better teams in regular season
than in the bowl and that is supposed to be the best game of the
year. " Thanks to

Nov 19, 2001 - Herd Basketball. "I
hate to tell everyone this, but Greg White is not going to be run
off by his alma mater.... As long as he runs a clean program, and
as long as he has winning seasons, and as long as he graduates his
players, he's not going anywhere.... Regardless of how much squawking
the alumni do. Even though OU set the precedent by running off what
I considered to be the class act of MAC basketball, the same thing
won't happen here. Greg White will be at Marshall until a bigger
school dangles a bigger carrot, because this administration will
not run him off. Until basketball becomes the priority that football
has been for Marshall (and will continue to be for the forseeable
future) everyone will have to be content with middle of the MAC
18-to-20 win seasons. 'Nuf sed." Thanks

Coach Z and Rick Huckabay? Players like Mike D'Antoni, Skip Henderson
and Tom Curry? What happened? The Blundering Herd blew an 18 point
lead to lose their opener against George Washington tonight. MU
only scored 11 points in the second half, after racking up 53 in
the first. Looks like Greg White's "adjustments" for the second
half weren't very effective. IMHO, a couple more games like that

Flat out, point blank OUT COACHED. You can't blame it on the team
missing shots. You cant single out specific players. It seems as
if the "big" games are never won. When you have a team as talented

Nov 15, 2001 - Bowl Matchups. "CNN/SI
predicts the bowl matchups and says the GMAC Bowl and Motor
City Bowl will swap their CUSA bids so UAB can play closer to home
against Marshall in Mobile and allow the MAC team in the Motor City
Bowl to play the better ranked CUSA #2. Once again it looks like
the Herd will be screwed in their quest for a quality opponent.
How come the MAC #1, ranked inside the top 25, is only good enough
to play a mediocre CUSA team that doesn't even register in any of
the top 25 polls? I guess giving Marshall the opportunity to play,
and possibly beat, a really good opponent would threaten the larger
conferences by giving some credibility to the Herd and the MAC.
This whole BCS controlled bowl system is starting to sound like
South Park's Eric Cartman in his police uniform, "Respect my
authoritay!!!!" In my opinion MU should hold out to see who
the opponent in the GMAC Bowl would be befo!
re accepting a bid. If the opponent is a nobody team the Herd should
try to get the Silicon Valley Classic bid to play against a respectable
Fresno State team."

Nov 15, 2001 - Air Attack Carrying Marshall. "Following
a big win over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, Marshall has moved into
the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll. A key element for the Thundering
Herd has been the exceptional performance of junior QB Byron Leftwich.
In my view, Leftwich is among the country's top five Heisman candidates.
This season, he has thrown for 3,094 yards and 25 TDs (and just
six interceptions) and is completing a remarkable 66.9 percent of
his passes. Against Miami (Ohio), Leftwich didn't throw any TDs
but was extremely efficient (28-of-41 for 285 yards). With Leftwich
airing it out so effectively, it's not surprising that the three
top receivers in the MAC all hail from Marshall. They are Darius
Watts, Josh Davis and Denero Marriott.
Against Miami (Ohio), Watts was contained by the RedHawk defense
(eight catches for just 44 yards). Davis, though, accounted for
102 yards on nine catches, and Marriott had seven receptions for
132 yards and one TD. By the way, the bad news for the rest of the
MAC is that these three wideouts are underclassmen. Here
is the link."

The only question is when? CUSA would like for Marshall to join

hope they still can work something out with Marshall before next

is my opinion, that if the NCAA passes the DIV 1 propossed regulations,
that it would actually help the MAC. If you think about it you would
have Marshall, Miami, Western Michigan, Toledo, BG, Ohio, and UCF.
All the other teams can't even draw hardly 500 fans on away games,
and they are the reason the MAC is considered one of the weakest
conferences in the NCAA today. Also these teams are much more competitive
every year, and thats...a good thing. What if you take these remaining
teams (MAC) and combined with the (Mountain West) with BYU,Colorado
ST. You would pretty much have a Big East playing level conference.
Does anyone have any other ideas ?" Thanks

those of you griping about attendance? Did you happen to see the
massive crowd between TCU and East Carolina last night? Now I don't
particularly like the MAC, but that was just pathetic."
